A night on Molokai

We got up Tuesday morning at O dark 30.....Like 5AM. After coming out of shock we got in the car and Headed for Lahaina and the Molokai Princess. The Molokai Princess is the ferry from Lahaina to Molokai. Boat leaves at 7:15. You can see the Sun rise.

Was quite a ride over as the seas were really up. There was no riding on top as the spray was coming over the top. The trip is an hour and a half. When we got there we rented a car and went looking for the Villas at Kaluakoi. This was where were were staying for the night and also playing golf at 11AM. We arrived and checked in. Our room was ready, so we dumped our stuff and headed for the golf course.

The golf course at Kaluakoi was built maybe 25 years ago. You can tell that at one time it had to be really great. It still is but it suffered badly a few years ago when they closed down and quit watering. The course reopened two years ago. You can see where there were all kinds of Palm trees that had been cut off because they died. It was really a fun and challenging course. I played well for the first 6 holes. Even par with two birdies, but as usual the real Joe showed up. The views were spectacular. There is a view of the ocean from all 18 tee boxes. Check out their pictures. We played with a couple from Vancouver B.C. Harold and Barbara. They were really fun. They were staying in one of the condos for a month. After golf we went to their condo and had a drink. We felt bad that we had to leave for dinner. Sue and I had not eaten since a continental breakfast on the ferry. After diner we tried to make the TV work but it would not, so we went to bed.

We got up Wednesday to no electricity. We were looking forward to morning coffee. So we got dressed, checked out and went on a quest for coffee. We were looking for the Cookhouse, but missed the turn and ended up at Kalaupapa lookout. Kalaupapa is the place where they had the Leper colony. There is a lot of history surrounding Kalaupapa.

After that we found the cookhouse and had a great breakfast. I was on Molokai 15 or so years ago and ate at the same place. As I remember it was really good back then too. I forgot to take a picture, bummer. No picture but good description. Cookhouse. From there we went to Molokai's other golf course. Ironwood hills. If you looked at the link to Kaluakoi there was also info about Ironwood. This was an experience. Apparently this use to be the private course for the Dole Pineapple plantation. You can tell it was a lot better in the past. There were lots of well placed bunkers, but the bottoms were flat with weeds and no sand. Lots of unused rakes in every one. It also had beautiful views. You can see the place is in disrepair by looking at the club house. There was a nice little old lady. Maybe the club pro. She was a short cutie. Lots of shall we say age lines. We especially liked the lovely access road.

Next were were getting dry so we stoped at the Hotel Molokai. Very nice place right on the beach. We each had two drinks and the bill was only $15. We left there and drove out to the other end of the island where we could look back on Maui. It is very pretty out there and there were some nice beaches. Kapalua is right behind us.

Well it was getting time to check in the car, so we went back to Hotel Molokai and had our last cheep drink and ordered a BLT to go. We took back the care and had a picnic in the ferry terminal. The trip back was calmer and we saw lots of whales. Got back home about 6:30 had a light dinner and watched TV All in all it was a really great two day adventure. We seem to have a lot of those.
